Multiworld?

Hey guys, surf here. I've been testing the Multiverse plugin in order to expand our options for dealing with Noobs and updates.

Here's my theory: After dealing with deciding how to handle the last big update, we had so much deabte about "keep this map" or "make a new map" that I want to be able to compromise on both. We could keep our world as "main map" and then make a new map called something like "update map" which you know not to build in, but gets completely reset each update. Going into it, you know not to set up a permanent shop. Either that, or we make a "1.8" map, then a "1.9" map, etc., knowing that we technically don't have a space limitation on our host. Additionally, while noob spawn is neat and useful, I think it'd be easier to actually lock noobs onto another map that can be deleted/restored every so often.

Nothing is set in stone for sure, this is still just a test, but with 1.8 around the corner, I think we should keep our options open. One reason this isn't an obvious solution is because it's not yet unclean to ship between worlds. This plugin is broken into 3 pieces, Core (related to structuring the worlds and folders) and 2 Portal plugins. The Core plugin gives us commands to traverse/control the worlds...the Portal plugins allow you to make portals to jump between them. Neither is clean, to be honest. First, read this link about using portals: Multiverse Portals. Anything being a portal, wooden axes as select tools...ugliness.

There IS a built-in set of commands related to jumping worlds. We can assign different permission levels to TP yourself, or to tp others. Basically, you can enable people to tp themselves between worlds. The issues are, though, that you go to that world's default spawn. If you're in the main world, you can /spawn and go to your normal spawn. You only get 1 /home in the whole multiverse. But technically each world has a "true" spawn which is where you end up when you jump. In our main world...NoobSpawn is the "default" spawn, so that if bukkit died noobs wouldn't suddenly be at member spawn. If you jump from a world to our world, you're at noobspawn, then you can /home or /spawn like normal. I don't think this is terrible.

There's some issues with the way permissions inherits in new worlds...for example, there's global configs, and per-world configs, and you have to reset the server for global configs to cascade down.

Here's a bunch of links about this plugin and how it works:

I'd love some feedback on how people would think this will work. Either way, 1.8 is coming. As always, don't update your client without backing it up first, as we won't update the server until bukkit is ready to go. With an update like this, that could be a week. I think by the time we're ready to update the server to 1.8, we'll know if Multiverse is a viable solution to all this. SURF OUT!

clever i like. the idea of having another map for noobs, and a restore that would be great imo.

i like the idea of having a map that resets every update because it’s like you have to restart all over which is kinda fun, and you can use all the new updates. but can you transfer items from one world to another?

Yea, you take your inventory with you, just like going to the nether. I would tell ppl don’t build elaborate homes in case we reset any of the non-main maps.

Tell ppl to view this page…if for nothing just for our ad revenue :D

i love the idea, and am i right in syaing we can have 3 of these? if so this is what i propose
    1) we have a seperate noob world (naturally)
    2) we have a constant sky world (not the current one though as this is for testing)
    3) we have an update world: this is the world that will be reset fully each update to bring in the new features.

thats my idea for the seperate worlds, as for the system of traveling between the worlds, i have an idea but it may or may not work.
There is a plugin called stargate which i used on my server, its using an obsidian portal like normal but then placing a sign on there and putting in the parameters like name, channel etc. now this works wonderfully in one world, but im not to sure as to whether it will work within multiverse.

I think we should have a 1.8 world a 1.9 world etc, I don’t like the idea of my creations to dissapear. A seperate noob world is a must also. Also I would like to be able to use the new creative mode setting in those 1.8/1.9/2.0 worlds. But also keep in mind that the release of the full game is not too far off as well. That means there will probly be less updates, and more focus on user mods.

Ive also been tossing a idea around in my head. would it be possible to have a map for pvp events. you should only build in this map if you have a good idea for a arena, CTF map or something like that. keep it small and only for server events and when people want to just have it out. (so like 600×600 at most) what do you think?

i like creations disapearing =D it gives u the feeling when you just finished a beautiful wooden house, so you stand back to admire it and then……… BABOOM!!! lightning strikes it and makes u restart completely. and it makes it more interesting having to start all over.

I’m definitely all for the idea of having a separate world for building new stuff, now matter if it has PVP, constantly restarts, or is a “sky city”, but I don’t see the point behind making a world for noobs. We already have them trapped in their little noobspawn 25k away from everything so, unless this world would have some sort of special set up that would help us to control noobs, I don’t really see the point. I feel like it would just be easier to keep noobspawn right where it is.

only reason i can think of for separate noobspawn world is that it always gets trashed and maybe you could reset it or sometin. and some people might be able to find their way to the members spawn considering how many noobs have friends that r members and compasses leed to the noobspawn. think about it XD
